Sport Research Group

East Midlands higher education institutions (HEIs) have a record of excellence in sport research, including a 5* research department and centres of internationally recognised expertise.

There are a number of groupings of research expertise across the HEIs including:

  • The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences and The Sports Technology
    Research Group at Loughborough University
  • The International Centre for Sport History and Culture (ICSHC) at De Montfort University
  • The sport science team at Nottingham Trent University
  • Centre for the Sociology of Sport in the Sociology Department at the University of Leicester.
  • The Sport & Exercise Research Group at the University of Northampton
  • The Centre for Sport Medicine at the University of Nottingham
  • Department of Sport, Coaching & Exercise Science at the University of Lincoln

Collaborative Sport PhD Studentships

An exciting collaboration between the HEIs aims to build on existing expertise and strength by offering collaborative PhD studentships in sport.

Currently seven of these studentships are running in the region, it is hoped that more will be offered soon:

  • Local sport, ethnicity and community in Leicester: re-advertising April/May and jointly supervised by Prof Dick Holt, De Montfort University and Mr John Williams, University of Leicester.
  • Bone geometry in amenorrhoeic athletes: student Rachel Duckworth started in July 2007 and is being jointly supervised by Katherine Brooke-Wavell, Loughborough University and Dr Nick Peirce at the University Hospitals, Nottingham.
  • The impact of hypoxic environments on appetite regulation: student Lucy Wasse is being jointly supervised by David Stensel, Loughborough University and Caroline Sunderland, Nottingham Trent University.
  • New techniques to assess neuromuscular conditioning and joint injury: student Ricci Hannah started in Oct 2007 and is being supervised jointly by Claire Minshull, Nottingham Trent University and Dr Jonathan Folland, Loughborough University.
  • Developing a new mobile biosensor for anabolic steroid detection at sporting events: student Miss Huey-Jen Fang started on 25th September 2007 and is being jointly supervised by Dr N Thomas, The University of Nottingham and Glen McHale, Nottingham Trent University.   • Electrochemical manufacturing of more affordable titanium golf clubs: student Mr Di Hu started on the 1st October 2007 and is being jointly supervised by Dr George Chen, The University of Nottingham and Steve Fletcher, Loughborough University.
  • Parental and coach driven development of psychological competencies in young athletes: student Julie Douglas is due to start in October 2008 and will be Jointly supervised by Dr Chris Harwood, Loughborough University and Dr Antoinette Minniti, Nottingham Trent University.
